Gambling is defined as an act of playing for stakes, betting for money or any other thing of material value. In gambling, the outcome of the bet could be seen in a short period of time.

In the US, Las Vegas, Nevada, has long been a tourist destination and it was the only place where gambling was allowed before 1990. Today, after gambling was legalized, there are about 1668 casinos in several US states where gaming activities are being done.

There are several types of gambling. Some are found in casinos, others are done at race tracks, and some are done through informal ways.

Casinos offer an assortment of gaming activities, the most popular of which are the slot machines. 70% of casino revenues have been reported to be coming from slot machines.

Others are card games requiring complicated strategies and rules to memorize. These games are usually played by male participants. Examples are black jack and variations of poker.

Horse and dog racings are common in many places and betting is done through a pari-mutuel pools or bookmakers. In pari-mutuel, price dividends or pay-offs are determined by the pool bets.

In some countries, heavy bets take place through pari-mutuel or in some instances, bookmakers in a cockfight derby.

Other gaming activities are bingo, raffles and lotteries used by charitable institutions to raise funds for their activities.

Tile game and sports betting are other kinds of gambling which are not regulated.

Mahjong, a tile game, is played by four players, and is usually done as a friendly game inside the house.

Betting on sports such as basketball, boxing, golf and football, recently, have appealed to the public. Bets are placed on their favorite player or team by two contracting parties and have no formality in transactions. Losers pay on the basis of their agreed amount.

On higher scale, professionals turn to currency speculations which are risky transactions, but are potentially profitable.

As a business, legal gambling is really big, as in year 2000, according to a record; Americans had legally wagered $61 billion. When you sum up the amount wagered worldwide, it could come up to trillions of money.

Gambling has fascinated many people despite the risk involved. To some people, it is some kind of pleasure, while for others it is a source of income. But the main attraction of gambling is the idea of winning big money quickly.
